Alberto R. Kornblihtt

Dr. Alberto Kornblihtt is Full Professor at the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales (School of Sciences) of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and Investigator at the Institute of Physiology, Molecular Biology and Neurosciences (IFIBYNE) of the National Research Council of Argentina (CONICET). He graduated as a biologist (1977) from the UBA and obtained a PhD in biochemistry (1980) at the Campomar Foundation, supervised by Héctor Torres. He received post-doctoral training (1981-1984) in Oxford, UK with Francisco Baralle.
Dr. Kornblihtt's research focuses on the coupling of transcription and alternative pre-mRNA splicing. He found that promoters affect alternative splicing through changes in transcriptional elongation and recruitment of splicing factors to RNA polymerase II. More recently, his group showed how DNA damage and epigenetic chromatin changes modulate alternative splicing through its coupling with transcription.
Dr. Kornblihtt's research is funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (USA), the European Network on Alternative Splicing (EURASNET), the Argentine National Agency for the Promotion of Science and Technology (ANPCYT), the CONICET and the UBA. He was awarded the Guggenheim fellowship (1991), the Konex Platinum Award (2003) and a chair from the Fundación Antorchas (2000-2008). He also serves the Board of Reviewing Editors of Science and the Editorial Boards of Mol. Cell. Biol., FEBS J. and IUBMB Life. He organized, chaired sessions and presented plenary talks in several international scientific meetings. He also wrote many reviews on the multiple links between eukaryotic transcription and pre-mRNA processing.
