The city of Barcelona, with its unique Modernisme architecture, delicious cuisine and Mediterranean atmosphere, provided a very attractive backdrop for bringing together an international panel of scientists to discuss recent contributions of Drosophila research to the understanding and treatment of human diseases. October 2006 marked the inaugural "Drosophila as a Model for Human Diseases" meeting, which was organized by Cayetano González and Marco Milán of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) and ICREA (Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats). Twenty-eight researchers were invited to present their perspectives on how the fruit fly is proving useful for studies of cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders, drug addiction, aging, and immunity. The IRB is a recently established research institution that was founded in October 2005. The Institute aims to promote multidisciplinary research and collaborations with local and international research institutes, and judging by the success of this meeting it appears poised to achieve these goals.
