On Friday, December 1, 2006, Dr. Russ Klein, a former University of Arizona Cancer Biology Graduate Interdisciplinary Program student, died after a year long battle with erythroid leukemia. He put up a very brave and valiant effort against his cancer. Russ received his PhD degree in Cancer Biology in 1998. He did his PhD work in the laboratory of Tim Bowden and his dissertation dealt with growth factor and cytokine regulation of matrix metalloproteinase expression in human prostate carcinoma cells. After receiving his PhD in Cancer Biology he went to MD Anderson Cancer Center, Science Park, Smithville, TX, to work as a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Sue Fischer. As a postdoc, Russ continued his interest in prostate cancer research and focused on chemoprevention of prostate cancer. During his tenure as a postdoctoral fellow he received a prestigious NCI KO7 award. Russ joined the faculty at Ohio State University as an Assistant Professor of Human Nutrition and a researcher in the Arthur James Cancer Center. He continued his research in the chemoprevention of cancer, focusing on prostate and bladder cancer. Russ was in the process of building his funding base and expanding his personnel in the laboratory. Russ was a very creative and innovative researcher. He easily developed new techniques and was able to synthesize and test new hypotheses. He was a very caring and helpful mentor of young students. Russ is survived by his wife Brenda and four children, Christopher, Lindsey, Jordan and Caleb.
