SHREW1 gene encodes a novel transmembrane protein in adherens junctions. The confocal image shows nuclei (red) and localization of Shrew1-GFP on cell membrane and in adherens junctions (green) of U251 glioma cells. In a study by McDonald and Dunlap et al., in this issue of Cancer Biology and Therapy, SHREW1 gene was found to reside in the consensus region of deletion of approximately 630 kb on the short arm of chromosome 1, which is observed frequently in oligodendroglioma (60-80%). Restoration of SHREW1 expression resulted in suppression of glioma cell adhesion and migration. Thus, SHREW1 inactivation may play a role in the development in oligodendroglial tumors.
