The cover demonstrates immunohistochemical labeling of fascin overexpression (brown color) in ampullary adenocarcinoma cells, but not in adjacent normal ampullary epithelium. In addition to Fascin, one of many genes found by Michael Goggins and colleagues (Van Heek et al.) to be overexpressed in ampullary adenocarcinomas is osteopontin. Affected patients not only overexpress osteopontin in their cancers, but also display significantly elevated serum levels of osteopontin, raising hopes that measurement of serum osteopontin may aid in the early detection and follow-up of patients with ampullary adenocarcinoma.
