Autophagy, is a unique peer-reviewed journal with an international audience that covers the following topics: Macroautophagy, microautophagy, specific organelle degradation (e.g., pexophagy) and additional autophagic processes including chaperone-mediated autophagy; The molecular mechanism of autophagy including the characterization of structural proteins and structure/function relationships; Signaling and autophagic regulation; The role of autophagy in diseases including cancer, neurodegeneration and myopathies; Developmental roles of autophagy and its connection with aging; Autophagy in microbial invasion and the immune response; and Autophagy in cell death.

Autophagy will publish three general types of papers: Original research, reviews, and commentaries. Reviews and commentaries will generally be invited. We propose to cover a wide range of topics in all experimental systems. We also anticipate special issues that are devoted to particular areas of research. Suggestions for appropriate specialized topics will be welcome.

We believe this is an excellent time to start this journal for several reasons:

  • Interest in autophagy has increased tremendously as noted by the success of the International Symposium on Autophagy and the Gordon Research Conference on Autophagy in Stress, Development and Disease.
  • Autophagy-related publications have dramatically increased in recent years, and the community of autophagy researchers and students similarly grows at a steady pace. A journal devoted to this field will help define and build a community of interested scientists.
  • A resource is needed that reflects the increasing importance of autophagy and that provides a venue for the active exchange of information between autophagy research groups worldwide.
  • Autophagy will provide a definitive resource that will help promote the field
