Membrane traffic pathways require the transport of material between successive organelles, which in neurons may be more than one meter apart. This traffic involves \r\na varied mix of microtubule- and actin-based motility, driven by dynein, kinesin family members and myosins. In this chapter, we will describe the morphology and movement of the membrane carriers that transport material between organelles and the machinery that drives their motility, concentrating on molecular motor proteins in vertebrate non-neuronal cells. We will also consider the role played by Rab proteins as integrators of trafficking and motility.
